Mission Statement
Counterpart Travels is a project of the aid organisation SYPO, and is started to offer more relevant, more interesting positions for people looking for volunteer work in Uganda. We have worked in development aid in Uganda for many years, so that we have a vast network of organisations to place volunteers with. Counterpart Travels is a response to three problems that we saw with volunteer work.
Firstly, there is a vast number of profiteering organisations that offer the 'opportunity' for people to volunteer their services at extortionate rates. This gives the impression that volunteering is a very expensive affair. It should not be.
Secondly, in the majority of instances volunteers are not being placed in positions where they have the opportunity to put either their education or their primary skills to good use. This means that volunteer placements themselves are not always useful. They should be.
Thirdly, there is a tendency to place volunteers in positions that would be better filled by local people themselves. This actually does more harm than good, as it steals employment possibilities from people who are in dire need of them.
The net result is that educated and skilled people with a global conscience and a desire to help are wasting their money and wasting their time.
Counterpart Travels was started to offer people who would like to do voluntary work in Africa the chance to actually do relevant work, without paying too much for it. Our experience with development work and large network of organisations in Uganda enables us to find you the best volunteer work, at the lowest price.
