Current Vacancies

Below are some of the possible volunteer positions.

  • Medical students, nurses or doctors are invited to work in hospitals in the Mukono district. Counterpart Travels has a lot of experience with the placement of medical volunteers. The actual work the volunteer will do is decided locally by medical staff. Volunteer doctors are also placed, often with the possibility of working in several hospitals to increase the range of the work.

Students of medicine can be placed, which ever year they are in. Nurses and midwives or students of nursery are welcome to volunteer in this position.

The typical placement will involve you working in two different hospitals; one small and one larger referral hospital - this way you can experience the reality of the difficult conditions small rural hospitals have to work in, but also learn from the wider range of interventions possible in the larger hospitals. This position involves a lot of patient contact, and in many cases you will be able to assist in surgery. You can choose to combine your work in the hospitals with social medical work; medical trainings or sensitization programmes in the villages. For this position, you will need to bring your own white coat.

  • Primary school teacher in a school in Mukono town. General teachers and teachers of physical education can be placed in this position. We can arrange that you work in one, but also in several different schools, in order to get a feel for the differences and specific challenges of the schools. In most cases, you will work several days a week in one school, and the rest of the week in another. If you have teaching experience, the schools will ask you to teach independently; otherwise, you can assist during classes of other teachers. If you choose to teach physical education, you contribute in a very real way to the children's health and ability to concentrate during other classes. For this position, bringing items that will help during sports classes (footballs, etc) will be greatly appreciated.

  • Computer/ Windows Office trainings Although access to computers is improving, many Ugandans have little experience with software such as Windows Office. In this position, you will work from two different locations to give training to local NGO workers, school children and government workers. Although we will make sure that there are computers available for you to train people on, and participants for the tranings, you will have the responsibility to design and develop the contents of the training. Basic knowledge of the Windows Office programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) is enough for you to be able to work in this position. If you have more detailed skills, such as website building, those are also very much appreciated!

  • Secondary school teacher in several schools around Mukono town. Teachers of most subjects can be placed, but only if qualified. It is possible to work in more than one school during your time in Uganda. The level of English in Ugandan secondary schools can be quite high, which is something to bear in mind if you are not a native speaker.

  • Medical consultant, to teach representatives of villages the basics in medicine in a short work shop, realising limited but accessible medical care in rural villages. You will be asked to design these trainings yourself, or improve existing training schedules. The trainings are given from small rural clinics (Health Centres II) around the district. This position requires you to work independently and with a lot of initiative, although you will cooperate with local health staff.

  • For small NGOs, bookkeeping courses and management trainings must be set up. Lots of small organization have fantastic ideas and great people working there, but not a lot of experience with paperwork. This position requires a lot of initiative from your site; designing your own training schedule.

  • Students of International Law are invited to work with a women and children's rights organisation, combined with work at the legal office of the local government. You will work several days a week at the organisation, and several days at the local government. Your work will include assisting with drafting legal documents, visiting stake-holders, interviewing victims, designing sensitization programmes, etc.

  • Physiotherapist, te work in both a clinic in Mukono town and in the village of Nkokonjeru. Only two clinics in the entire district have to care for all children with disabilities. The costs of transport to the clinics are too high for most parents, so the challenge in this position is to teach parents to continue simple treatment once back home. You will be asked to help with the routine patient diagnosis and treatment, but also with training parents of the children to continue treatment at home.

  • Trainings to primary schools about how to provide education for children with learning problems or mental handicaps. Mentally challenged children are not a priority in Uganda's schooling system; many do not even attend school because their parents know they will not receive adequate care. In this position, you give workshops to teachers about how they can make sure these children are not left out. Experience is required working with children with disabilities or learning problems.
