Mogelijke plaatsingen
Medical students, nurses or doctors
are invited to work in a regional referral hospital in the Mukono
district. Counterpart Travels has a lot of experience with the
placement of medical volunteers. The volunteers work closely together
with local staff and in many cases can assist in surgery. The actual
work the volunteer will do is decided locally by medical staff.
Volunteer doctors are also placed, often with the possibility of
working in several hospitals to increase the range of the work.
Students of medicine can be placed, whichever year they are in. Nurses and midwives or
students of nursery are welcome to volunteer in this position. Please
note that the local medical situation is very much unlike western
conditions, making this position an exceptionally challenging one.
Primary school teacher in a school in Mukono town. General teachers and teachers of physical education can be placed in this position. We can arrange that you work in one, but also in several different schools, in order to get a feel for the differences and specific challenges of the schools.
Secondary school teacher in several schools around Mukono town. Teachers of most subjects can be placed, but only if qualified. It is possible to work in more than one school during your time in Uganda.
Medical consultant, to teach
representatives of villages the basics in medicine in a short work
shop, realising limited but accessible medical care in rural villages.
For small NGOs, bookkeeping courses and
management trainings must be set up. Lots of small
organization have fantastic ideas and great people working there, but
not a lot of experience with paperwork.
Students of International Law are invited to work with a nation-wide community service programme; a programme funded by the EU to promote community service programmes as an alternative to conventional prison sentences. Volunteers will be asked to help with drafting legal papers, field visits, evaluation, etc.
Physiotherapist, te work in both a clinic in Mukono town and in the village of Nkokonjeru. Only two clinics in the entire district have to care for all children with disabilities. The costs of transport to the clinics are too high for most parents, so the challenge in this position is to teach parents to continue simple treatment once back home.
Trainings to primary schools
about how to provide education for children with learning problems or
mental handicaps. Mentally challenged children are not a priority in
Uganda's schooling system; many do not even attend school because their
parents know they will not receive adequate care. In this position, you
give workshops to teachers about how they can make sure these children
are not left out. Experience is required working with children with disabilities or learning problems.
Chef to train other chefs
in a big Ugandan hotel. More general management training is also
needed. As someone who has experience in the hospitality branche, you
help this hotel with the set-up of the kitchen and the training of its
personnel.
ICT assistance
such as website building for local NGOs or local government. A real
challenge, since equipment is never up to date, and one has to be
inventive to deal with power cuts and the like.
