Accommodation
Counterpart Travels can find suitable accommodation for your stay in Uganda. That means we will find you a place close to where you work, and that meets the standard of luxury (or lack of it!) that you wish. For most volunteer positions, you can stay in our own guesthouse 'Besaniya'. For alternatives, please also read below.
Besaniya Guesthouse - The aid organisation SYPO, of which Counterpart Travels is a project, has started Besaniya as a place to host volunteers and to start offices for the organisation (see photos around this text). The guesthouse consists of several small 'bandas' (huts), and some larger appartments with kitchen, bathroom and living room. There is a large communal kitchen, and all is situated on a beautiful hill just outside the centre of Mukono town. The guesthouse, with views over Lake Victoria and monkeys running around, is primarily aimed at volunteers, but others are welcome to stay. For volunteers, it is a place to relax after the intense experiences of the day, and to discuss these with other volunteers. From Besaniya, we can help arrange trips around the country from here.
Staying in Besaniya costs between 5 and 8 euros a night, depending on the room (with or without bathroom, living room, kitchen). The 6 euros a night beds are in well maintained but simple huts without bathrooms, and sometimes shared with one other person. Of course there are showers and toilets that you can use nearby. For ~7 euros a night, you can stay in one of the simple apartments, which include a small kitchen and bathroom. All beds have good musquito nets, and you do not need to bring your own sheets etc. All income of Besaniya (and Counterpart Travels) are used to support the projects of SYPO and other local aid projects. You can see more photo's and read more information at www.sypo.nl/guesthouse
Alternatives
Hostel - In cities such as Mukono, there are several cheap hostels, with relatively clean rooms including bathroom for anything up from 12 euros a night for a single.
Host family - For more direct contact with the local community, it is possibble to stay in host families. There is usually no electricity or running water in this type of accommodation. We ask you to give the host family 4 euros a night. Please understand that staying with a host family can be extremely difficult, especially because of the complete lack of privacy.
Kikwayi Hostel - In the village of Kikwayi, the small Ugandan aid organisation Pat the Child runs a very simple but beautifully located guesthouse, near Lake Victoria. Kikwayi is a good place to get to know Ugandan rural life. Please be prepared for regular stops in electricity and water supply, and very remote and sometimes lonely life-style.
Hotels - In larger cities, there are Western standard hotels for Western prices (up from 100 dollars a night).
Please let us know what your preferences are, so that we can see what the best option for your specific position is.
